ESTABLISHING A CORRECT VIEW

Much of one's individual experience seems to be concerned with the way in which one views his condition or how much he values himself and others. It appears to the material senses that man is a curious mixture of good and evil, that he is upright and debased, spiritual and material. But is this a correct view of man? Christian Science assures us that it is not.

This Science reiterates the fact that man is made in the image and likeness of God, as recorded in the first chapter of Genesis. Furthermore, it states that God is Spirit; therefore man must be spiritual and perfect. That which appears to be contrary or opposite to this fact, Christian Science explains as the false testimony of the so-called material senses. The second chapter of Genesis records this mistaken view of man, which had its apparent origin in the mist that arose from the earth and the myth of Adam and Eve.

It is only within the realm of a false estimate of God and man that discord, inharmony, and evil seem to appear. Habakkuk's inspiration and insight were in accord with a spiritual and pure view of God when he spoke of Him thus (1:13): "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity." On page 591 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy defines man as "the compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind." Thus Christian Science makes a distinction between the real man, made in God's likeness, and a false belief of man that seems to come and go but in reality never does.
