"TWICE HAVE I HEARD THIS"

In childhood the writer learned to enjoy echoes. Living in a desert town, she frequently heard reverberations of a train whistle, resounding thunderclaps of summer storms, or voices ricocheting through a canyon. Christian Scientists recognize and value healing, regeneration, and harmonious living as the echo of Spirit in the vale of humanity. Every time a human problem is solved, we are hearing the echo of Truth which has decreed its own allness and thus adjudged evil a usurper.

Mary Baker Eddy assuredly knew this when she wrote in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 226), "The voice of God in behalf of the African slave was still echoing in our land, when the voice of the herald of this new crusade sounded the keynote of universal freedom, asking a fuller acknowledgment of the rights of man as a Son of God, demanding that the fetters of sin, sickness, and death be stricken from the human mind and that its freedom be won, not through human warfare, not with bayonet and blood, but through Christ's divine Science."

Are we wholly absorbed in material activities or clinging to matter as substantial? If so, we may not easily hear this prophetic voice sounding the "keynote of universal freedom." Are we attuned to the things of Spirit and loosening our grasp on materiality? Then we may experience the liberating effects of the divine Truth echoed in the crusade of Christian Science.
