INVENTIONS
[Of Special Interest to Young People]
The high school or college student may well appreciate the emphasis Christian Science places on spiritual understanding. Its Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, does not fail to point out that in our present human experience we should work intelligently to promote higher thought along spiritual lines for the sake of our growth. She states in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 195): "Whatever furnishes the semblance of an idea governed by its Principle, furnishes food for thought. Through astronomy, natural history, chemistry, music, mathematics, thought passes naturally from effect back to cause." She continues in the next paragraph: "Academics of the right sort are requisite. Observation, invention, study, and original thought are expansive and should promote the growth of mortal mind out of itself, out of all that is mortal."
God is the Principle of all that actually exists, and man is His perfect expression. Man, as the idea of infinite Mind, reflects Mind's qualities, and they are perpetuated in him. He is imbued, therefore, with knowledge and understanding through divine intelligence. Recognizing this, the student can carry out his chosen curriculum successfully. He accomplishes this through prayer, which leads to his demonstration of the truth.
With the many gadgets of today for the automobile, for the modern kitchen, for the office, for the school, one would seem to live in a world of inventions. Indeed, these are appealing and arouse the interest of those who are alert, whether or not they themselves are inventively inclined. The student of Christian Science often appreciates the value of modern contrivances even more than others, because he sees that they point to Mind's resourcefulness. However, God knows nothing of matter, regardless of its seeming importance or impressive nature. The resourcefulness and intelligence that bring about the invention are God-given and today supply, and will continue to supply, every human need.
