"MINUTE MEN AND WOMEN"

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

In Biblical times sandals were never worn in the house, but were put on when one was ready to take a journey or to do some particular work such as the shepherds did when they tended their flocks in the field. At home the shepherd always kept his sandals and staff ready for use on a moment's notice. These shepherds were truly the minutemen of that day.

In "Miscellaneous Writings" Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 158): "All God's servants are minute men and women. As of old, I stand with sandals on and staff in hand, waiting for the watchword and the revelation of what, how, whither. Let us be faithful and obedient, and God will do the rest." Our Leader was always prepared, ever guarding her revelation of Truth and protecting its future.

Mrs. Eddy declares Truth's motto to be semper paratus, meaning a state of being always prepared. Semper paratus might well be the watchword of all Christian Scientists, for every earnest and sincere student of this Science learns early in his experience the importance of preparedness. Young people who are interested in Christian Science well know the need of mental preparedness. As God's minute men and women they too stand "with sandals on and staff in hand," always ready to rise to meet and overcome any obstacle that may seem to hinder their progress.
