CHANGING CONCEPTS OF EARTH AND HEAVEN

There is freshness, beauty, form, color, and continuity in the kingdom of God. All that is pure and true on earth echoes the harmonies of heaven. As students of Christian Science we pray daily in the words of the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:10), "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." And this desire is emphasized by our inclusion of Mary Baker Eddy's spiritual interpretation of that passage in our textbook (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 17): "Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme."

Many have accepted heaven as their ultimate home, and they wish to escape from earth, believing that this escape will translate them to heaven. To such as these, earth may seem an unhappy place which they must leave in order to gain happiness.

The true idea of earth includes the harmonies of heaven. We shall never enter heaven by leaving earth, unless by the term earth we mean a state of materiality. Everything is a state of consciousness. Thus if consciousness is filled with material beliefs instead of spiritual ideas, the earth in which this consciousness appears to dwell is likely to be trouble-filled and even discordant and turbulent. This state of existence, however, is not the earth of God's creating, which is spiritual and harmonious.
