RADIO PROGRAM No. 51 - The Lasting Solution to Conflict

On this program Stephen J. Sametz of Winnipeg, Manitoba, told of his own experience, as follows:

Some years ago a serious strike started among the workers on the ore docks in Superior, Wisconsin. These men had the job of helping move iron ore from railway cars into the huge lake steamers.

I was appointed by the Department of Labor as a Commissioner of Conciliation and served with fourteen others on a committee to settle the strike. We had endless discussions, much bitter talk, and various proposals of adjustment. After many hours we weren't any nearer a solution than at the beginning. The situation began to be very disturbing. The railroads moving ore from the iron mines of Minnesota couldn't bring in ore. The ships couldn't sail without a cargo. And we even got reports that the steel furnaces in the East would soon have to close down.
