DIVINE ENCIRCLEMENT

We read and hear many statements these days regarding containment. In an effort to defend themselves from possible attack, nations sometimes build defenses in such a manner as to completely encircle an aggressor. In this way they hope to contain the enemy, that is, prevent him from breaking through the defenses and expanding his field of operations. But such defenses, regardless of their strength, sometimes fail, because they are built on material foundations and the conviction that there is an enemy to be overcome.

Jesus gave to mankind the sure methods of defense for the containment and destruction of all error. He never recognized an enemy as a real power. To him, all evil was a lie to be proved unreal, whether it was sin, sickness, death, or any aggressive activity of mortal mind. His victories were always achieved, not through material warfare, but through the power of Spirit rebuking error. The selfish and malicious efforts of his enemies to slay him could not stay his mission.

The love which motivated all his thoughts and acts was identified with the all-inclusive Love, which is God. This accounts for the bursting of the bonds of the tomb and of the flesh. Love's all-encompassing power dissolved every material obstacle, including mortal mind's boastful claim that death is the inevitable end for all men.
