PUTTING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Humanity's great desire is to be protected from harm, from evil in all its forms, such as disease, disaster, and discord. In undertaking to guard itself against these calamities, humanity has sought out many inventions, all partly or wholly having matter as their basis. Material systems have failed one by one to bring the needed help. Throughout the centuries before the advent of Christ Jesus the children of Israel had been looking for a Saviour, and many of them had caught glimpses of the true God and His Christ.

This was the experience of David when he went out to battle with Goliath. He was armed with spiritual-mindedness. He said to his adversary (I Sam. 17:45), "Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied." David's protection and safety lay in his firm trust in God. His armor was the armor of God, Spirit. His spiritualized consciousness delivered him from the hand of Goliath. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy tells us (p. 268): "Materialistic hypotheses challenge metaphysics to meet in final combat. In this revolutionary period, like the shepherd-boy with his sling, woman goes forth to battle with Goliath."

Jesus, our Way-shower, taught that we should look to God, Spirit, alone for our welfare and safety from all harm. Christian Science is based wholly on the teachings of Christ Jesus. It shows us how to demonstrate through spiritual understanding the indestructibility and permanency of Spirit, God, and His creation, man and the universe. The knowledge of the allness and all-power of Spirit, God, is Christianly scientific.
