"YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN"

Students of Christian Science are learning that Life is God and that the overcoming of error of any type depends upon the repudiating of the mistaken theory that man is a mortal, born of mortal parents. They are realizing the truth of the words which Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews (John 3:3), "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Like many other people, Nicodemus believed that man is material and finite. He thought of man as subject to material birth, growth, and old age. But Jesus made the distinction between the human belief of life in matter and real Life, which is spiritual and eternal, when he said: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee. Ye must be born again."

It is wise for the Christian Scientist to ask himself: "What concept of man am I accepting as true? Am I accepting the fleshly concept of man as real, or am I acknowledging my true being as God's infinite idea?" The acceptance and demonstration of the Christ as the true selfhood of all men frees us from fear, sickness, sin, and lack and is the new birth of which Jesus spoke. This new birth is not a rebirth of matter, but the birth of the Christ in human consciousness. The unfoldment of the Christ is continuous, and as our spiritual understanding expands we discern in ever-increasing measure man's true status as a child of God.
