HOPE IS NOT A CHEAT

The prophets of the Old Testament assured the faithful that "the Messiah the Prince," or deliverer, would be sent by God to free them from oppression. This expectation is called by Bible scholars the Messianic hope.

When Christ Jesus came he did not fulfill the expectations of the Jews in the way that they had humanly outlined. His was a higher-mission; and because most of the Jews were not able to see the spiritual import of his message, Jesus was not accepted by them as the Messiah. But though they understood it not, their hope was truly fulfilled in Christ Jesus. He brought the kingdom of God to all men; he showed them how to be freed from sin, disease, and death.

Before Jesus was crucified he promised that he would send another Comforter. His own words as recorded by John are (14:16), "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." After quoting this passage from John, Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 55), "This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science."
