Wholly Fulfilling Their Mission

[Note: Extracts from a report to the Reading Room Division from a librarian.]

Long Beach, California

In August, 1948, the board of directors of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Long Beach, received a letter from The Christian Science Board of Directors, sent out to the Field, recommending the advisability of locating Christian Science Reading Rooms in that part of the city where "they will most fully and effectively serve to promote and extend interest in Christian Science." The board of this church began at once to work toward this end.

There was some opposition to such a move, as many members felt that our Reading Room on the twelfth floor of an office building and overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean was the acme of beauty and harmony. But each successive board endeavored earnestly and prayerfully to bring this recommendation to fulfillment. They worked to know that obedience to the guidance of The Mother Church would bless the entire Field. They not only did faithful metaphysical work, but took many human footsteps in looking for a suitable location.
