THE EXAMPLE OF ELIJAH

In the story of Elijah is found the unseen, silent battle of an individual's flight from sense to Soul—a battle that ends in the transcending glory of the oneness of God and man.

It was early in his experience that Elijah obeyed the voice of God and went to brook Cherith. There he found water to drink, and God sent ravens to feed him. Undoubtedly any earnest student of Christian Science can remember those times when, seeking release from error's claims, he thirsted and hungered for the freedom which comes from an insight into those spiritual truths which God always supplies. Perhaps morning and evening, day after day, he declared the power of God to heal and save him and all mankind, and one by one he beat down the arguments of suppositional mortal mind, until the day came when he, like Elijah, was spiritually equipped to go forth to help the "widow woman ... gathering of sticks" (I Kings 17:10).

There are many today whom the student sees on his journey Spiritward who are gathering "sticks" who are perplexed, frustrated by their slowly waning supply of oil and meal—their inspiration and sustenance—forgetting to look to God for His gifts of abundance. They, like the widow of Elijah's day, are ready to "die."
