OPENING TRADE LANES

In these days there is much discussion regarding the subject of trade relations among the nations of the world. No nation is self-sufficient. Many seek to purchase goods or raw materials to meet the everyday needs of their people. Others look to distant lands to sell the goods which they have produced. So great is the need for importing and exporting supplies that nations which are not ordinarily friendly are sometimes driven to seek trade agreements with one another for the welfare of their people. And some nations place tariff restrictions on goods produced outside their territories to protect their own farmers and manufacturers.

Christian Science presents the right answer to the problem of how to establish harmonious and successful trade relationships throughout the world. And every Christian Scientist has his part to play in this important work of meeting human needs, for the individual's welfare is directly involved. Faced with the material evidence of competition, confusion, and misunderstanding on the subject of trade among nations, the Christian Scientist finds comfort in the truth indicated in Mary Baker Eddy's statement (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 200), "Let 'the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing;' our trust is in the Almighty God, who ruleth in heaven and upon earth, and none can stay His hand or say, 'What doest thou?'"

As men learn to acknowledge God's supreme power and His loving provision for all, human methods of procedure will be increasingly governed by divine law, and better trade relations will result for all mankind. The prophet Isaiah refers to God's bounteous provision for all, and shows clearly that human needs are fully met as men's thoughts turn to divine Love and acknowledge its guidance and supply. He writes (Isa. 55:1), "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price."
