CONSCIOUS IDENTITY

It is evident that each of us is a conscious identity, aware of himself and of his environment. According to the revelation of Christian Science, man's identity, or individual consciousness, is God's image and consequently is spiritual and perfect. We find this truth set forth in the first chapter of Genesis, and Christ Jesus proved its correctness by ascending into a wholly spiritual conscious state, thereby putting off the human concept.

On page 475 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy defines man in part as "the conscious identity of being as found in Science, in which man is the reflection of God, or Mind, and therefore is eternal."

God, or Mind, is fully conscious. There are no lurking unconscious strata of thought in Mind. The fact is that God's knowing is the conscious creative process by which man and the universe are made and sustained. If God became unconscious of any identity which He has formed, that identity would disappear—would cease to exist. But because God is Mind, there is no unconsciousness in Him; and because "man is the reflection of God, or Mind," there is no unconscious element in his identity.
