THE GREAT OFFICE OF CHRIST, TRUTH

In her article "Science and Philosophy" Mary Baker Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 366), "To destroy sin and its sequence, is the office of Christ, Truth,—according to His mode of Christian Science; and this is being done daily." Today, through Christian Science, Christ. Truth, is fulfilling its universal office in the daily destruction of evil by revealing man's spiritual sonship with God. Receptive ones everywhere find the Christ bringing their own immortality to light, revealing God's allness and man's true selfhood as His perfect expression, whose being is entirely in and of Spirit. Healing follows. For to the degree that the truth of this spiritual idea of existence, or divine sonship, unfolds in individual consciousness, the unreality of all material-mindedness, with its sequence of disease and death, is exposed and destroyed.

As the revelation through which the healing efficacy of the Christ, Truth, has been made available today, Christian Science is subject to the same general misunderstanding that surrounded the Master during his ministry. Most of this can be traced to our false educational systems, which tend to surround with an air of mystery and supernaturalism the healing of physical diseases by spiritually mental means. In reality, however, true spiritual healing is no more mysterious or supernatural than the correction of a numerical mistake. As a matter of fact, numerical mistakes and physical disorders are both negations; they both come as a result of wrong thinking; and they both disappear with the discernment of the truth.

Just as naturally as the discernment of mathematical truth destroys mathematical errors, so the discernment of man's spiritual sonship— the truth that man exists forever at the standpoint of spiritual perfection—erases the inharmonies of being. The activity of Christ, Truth, in human consciousness is like the dawn of a new day: it heals spontaneously, dissolving discords much as light dispels darkness. Christ Jesus summed it all up in one very brief but potent statement when he said (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
