GETTING STARTED IN BUSINESS

The young person seeking to start a business career often finds himself facing a dilemma. Most employers require experience; experience requires employment. Without Principle to guide him, the beginner is often perplexed as to how he can satisfy both requirements without being allowed access to either. A similar problem often faces the established employee who wants to move to a field of endeavor other than that in which he has already gained experience.

One student of Christian Science has found through the application of Principle, as taught in Christian Science, that it is possible to surmount these seemingly impassable human limitations. Many years ago, seeking employment in a field in which he strongly felt his abilities fitted him for useful service, this student found himself facing the usual limitations. Recognizing them as humanly conceived, hence as neither inevitable nor irrevocable, he prayerfully sought the true status of his capability. Lack of experience, he reasoned, is a claim of mortal mind that infinite Mind is not complete, that it does not include all necessary intelligence. But he knew from his study of Christian Science that intelligence is the fundamental quality of infinite Mind, God. Since man is the expression of Mind, he cannot lack the intelligence or opportunity to reflect completeness at all times.

By shutting out of his thought all but the truth regarding man, the student found a calm, steadfast trust in God's ability to silence and nullify the error of human limitation. He saw that through outlining a single specific field for his endeavors he had been limiting not only his opportunity to find the right job but also his ability to receive divine Mind's perfect guidance, for which he was so earnestly praying. So he unreservedly relinquished his preconceived desire as to what seemed to be his right work and clung to a statement made by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." Thus his consciousness was prepared to receive the guidance which comes from true prayer— guidance which stems from Love.
