"A grain of Christian Science...
"A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 445). In the year 1907 relatives who were Christian Scientists sent the Sentinel to our home. As my mother read a copy of it I was quickly healed of ptomaine poisoning.
Several years later, while I was attending high school, a neighbor gave me a copy of "Rudimental Divine Science" by Mrs. Eddy. I read, reread, and memorized passages from this little book; and I gained a fuller glimpse of the fact that Christian Science is the law of God. My health improved, and I was healed of heart trouble and of bone felons on two fingers. After this experience I borrowed every book that I could find on religion in the public library, but I was disappointed in what I read until a shelf of books by Mrs. Eddy was discovered. As I read her books I joyfully recognized that they contained the truth which makes free. In one treatment by a practitioner I was healed of internal injuries and a broken jaw resulting from an automobile accident.
At one time all the members of my immediate family were ill with influenza. Since I was the only student of Christian Science in our home, I felt that I should make an effort to get up and do something about this situation. I studied the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and Mrs. Eddy's article "The New Birth" (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 15-20). Also I read the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy from cover to cover. I became so absorbed in what I was reading that I did not notice until later that the family were all up and dressed, entirely well. Later that same day a telegram was delivered to my father offering him a better position in a large city, which he accepted. He had been told six weeks before that it would be necessary to serve many more years with his company before he would be eligible for this position. We moved to the larger city, and for the first time I had the privilege of attending a Church of Christ, Scientist, and of visiting the Reading Room.
