WE TREAD ON SPIRIT'S FORCES

We tread on Spirit's forces—laws
Which hold the universe in glorious bonds
Of freedom and security.

Uzza put forth an unfortunate hand
To hold the ark of God
Swaying when the slow oxen stumbled.
Rebuke of presumption
Halted the gay processional,
Hushed the glad chorus,
Silenced the harp and cymbal,
The psaltery, the trumpet, and the timbrel,
Struck fear into David's heart
And gave him pause
How to take home the covenant
Of God.

Shall we not then stay the hand
Solicitously yearning
To aid with mortal mode
Eternal Mind's perpetual turning?
The faintest press of meddling hand or thought
God needs not.
Secure, we tread on Spirit's forces.
