IMAGES OF THOUGHT

In God's kingdom man reflects divine Mind, and his identity images forth the ideas and characteristics of Mind. Christian Science reveals this fact; and it compassionately explains that mortal life is a counterfeit of real life—that the physical body is false identity, which perversely reflects the thoughts and mental states of the so-called carnal mind—God's opposite.

Christian Science defines diseases of every kind as mental states and their symptoms as mental pictures, which disappear when God is understood as the only Mind. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 411): "Disease is an image of thought externalized. The mental state is called a material state. Whatever is cherished in mortal mind as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body."

If Christian Science arrived at its conclusions regarding disease only through human reasoning, it would be helpless to prevent or to destroy the mental pictures of disease and discord that seem to be imaged forth on the body. But its reasoning coincides with its divine revelation of God as the only Mind—the Mind of man and the only origin of his thoughts. This revelation reaches deep into human consciousness, illumines it spiritually, and eradicates the false mental pictures which mortal states of sin and fearful belief produce. And so we have right reasoning coinciding with spiritual intuition and revelation, and their inevitable outcome, which is proof of the real.
