HOME

[Original article in German]

"Home " is a sweet word to most people. It is usually associated with a certain house, certain people, trees, and plants, and not least with a certain country and a certain language. But when we look more closely, we see that these are related elements or attendant manifestations of home; they are not its essence. That is the love and understanding around us and within us. The spiritual understanding of what home or house really means will do more for those who are without a material home than they can today measure.

Even an architect who wants to design a house must first of all envision it in thought. He must be guided by clear concepts of what is useful, practical, and beautiful. He must have a clear concept of a suitable building lot, of the proper foundation, of strong sustaining walls. And in order to be able to locate the windows correctly, he must know the best means of utilizing light. He must also be acquainted with the fundamentals of heating in order to be able to select heating units. To choose colors correctly he must have a feeling for harmony. All these things must first be thought out before the house can be built.

While the architect is primarily concerned with the material manifestation, the Christian Scientist is primarily concerned with eternal ideas. He replaces material concepts with spiritual ideas. What, for example, is the right foundation upon which to build? We read in the Bible that it is the Christ, Truth. And Christian Science teaches that the Christ, or Rock of Truth, is available to us at all times. The light of the knowledge of God, which no storm can extinguish, is always present; we have only to turn toward it. When we recognize God's presence, we also possess the harmony which the builder must bring out. The source of the warmth in our home is divine Love, reflected in us.
