Some years ago I was greatly troubled with asthma. On several occasions the suggestion of passing on presented itself, but through the consecrated work of a Christian Science practitioner each time I gained relief.

Once when my mother had been sent for I told her that I was passing on. She immediately said: "You can't, for there is no place to go. Your true selfhood is in the kingdom of heaven." That broke the mesmerism for the time being, but fear of similar experiences continued to distress me. Although I worked for myself in Christian Science, the healing was not complete.

One winter I attended a triennial meeting for the election of Readers in our branch church. A recent attack of asthma had been more severe than usual, and I was very weak as the result of it. When the first ballot was announced I had a large number of votes for the office of Second Reader. One of my friends, who knew of my difficulty, asked me if I would accept the position if elected. In that moment I had to ask myself, "Do you honestly believe that Christian Science can heal permanently?"
