As a child I had a great desire...

As a child I had a great desire to know God better, and I often prayed that I might. When I came into Christian Science and learned what God really is I knew that my prayers had been answered.

While on a trip a few years ago I carried a considerable amount of money with me. One day when on a streetcar with a friend, I was carrying this money in a wallet in my pocketbook. The car came to a transfer point and stopped with a sudden jerk, throwing me slightly off balance as the crowd started getting off. When I regained imbalance I noticed that my pocket-book was open and that my wallet was missing. I was stunned and fearful, realizing that all the money I had for the trip was gone.

I told my friend what had happened, and we both got off the streetcar. As I tried to realize God's presence it was clear to me that I could not afford to believe the lies of mortal mind, and that I must stand firm in my understanding of God's allness. My friend strengthened my conviction of truth by declaring, "Man is honest; man is honest." Every claim of fear, lack, dishonesty, and cunningness had to be replaced with the truth concerning the situation. I asked myself what money was and knew that it was a medium of exchange by which to express gratitude for commodities and services. "Love's currency is not material," I declared. "It is spiritual. It is as near to me as God is, and I can no more be separated from it than I can from God."
