When I became interested in...
When I became interested in Christian Science in 1923 I was passing through a very difficult experience because of the failure of an old-established family business, of which I was the head. Three years of anxiety had made me a disagreeable and very worried individual, suffering from many ailments. A lifelong stomach ailment, together with constipation, hemorrhoids, and sick headaches, was causing continuous pain. The many material remedies I had tried had been of no avail. I had had two nervous breakdowns, and I suffered from varicose veins and a double hernia, as well as from three complaints of the eyes. In addition I was an inveterate smoker. As a result of my condition I was rejected as unfit for any form of military service during the First World War.
I was instantaneously healed of the stomach complaint in one treatment by a Christian Science practitioner. This occurred within a week of my first attendance at a service in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and the healing has been permanent. Shortly afterwards all the other ailments were healed also, and all desire for tobacco and alcohol left me. Subsequently I was passed by five doctors as a first-class risk for life insurance.
An acute problem of supply, resulting from the loss of my business, still faced me, however. With no business and practically no money, I had to take care of my three children, who were at public schools, and to face many other responsibilities. The solution to this problem, and with it the overcoming of fear of lack, followed my spiritual education, in which I had to give up all the preconceived ideas I had about personal ability, influential friends, and a material business as my source of supply, and to learn instead to utilize the fundamental truths which Mary Baker Eddy gives in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
