More than twenty years ago, while I was suffering from a severe case of hemorrhoids, a friend gave me the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. At first I was not interested because I could not see what help just reading a book could give anyone in my condition. But I opened it and read the first words of the chapter on Prayer (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." For these words I shall always be grateful.

The doctor had said that I would never be well again unless I had an operation. Instead of having the operation, I turned to Christian Science, and with the help of a Christian Science practitioner I received an instantaneous healing.

Several years later I visited a neighbor who was quite ill. I went to the rear door in order to keep from disturbing her, as she was alone. Her children had chained their dog nearby, and as I passed he bit me, tearing the flesh and ligaments of my leg severely. My neighbor had seen what had happened, and I forgot my wound in allaying her fears.
