"Man's extremity is God's opportunity."

"Man's extremity is God's opportunity." About three years ago I suffered shock from a surgical operation. A doctor told me that the only person who could help me was a psychiatrist; another doctor gave me a strong drug in an effort to quiet me. Although the drug put me to sleep, when I awoke I was much worse. This frightened me, as I knew the drug could be habit forming.

My husband had attended the Christian Science Sunday School, and I asked him if he thought Christian Science could help me. He said: "Yes, but you cannot have both medical treatment and Christian Science help. You must make your choice." Since I did not want to take any more of the drug, I decided to see if Christian Science would heal me. After making my decision I slept until morning, when I called a Christian Science practitioner. My healing came after one visit to the practitioner. Words cannot describe the peace I experienced following that visit.

Social drinking and smoking were overcome without any specific work on the problem, and undesirable traits of character—impatience, criticism, bad temper, and envy—fell away. This verse from the Bible helped me very much at that time (Eccl. 3:15): "That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past." I was also helped by these words by Martin Luther: "Here I stand. I can do no otherwise; so help me God! Amen!"
