SEEKING GOD

"Oh that I knew where I might find him!" These words of Job's (23:3) doubtless are often echoed in the thoughts of mortals when they encounter trouble and realize their urgent need of a demonstrable understanding of God. This priceless blessing, however, awaits but their acceptance in the logical and provable teaching of Christian Science, which gives clear and unmistakable guidance to the path we must take to find God and to experience the harmony that is characteristic of the creation of divine Love.

Since God is ever present, we might ask ourselves why we are not conscious of this presence, feeling that it is natural for us to know Him. This Science answers our questions by pointing out that it is nothing but our belief in a false, so-called material existence apart from Him that blinds us to His presence. For example, Mary Baker Eddy writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 543): "In divine Science, the material man is shut out from the presence of God. The five corporeal senses cannot take cognizance of Spirit. They cannot come into His presence, and must dwell in dreamland, until mortals arrive at the understanding that material life, with all its sin, sickness, and death, is an illusion, against which divine Science is engaged in a warfare of extermination." It is clear from this that in order to find God we must awaken from the illusion or dream existence called material life, a sense of existence which both reason and revelation tell us cannot be real or God-ordained. To this end prayerful and regular study of the Bible Lessons, to be found in the Christian Science Quarterly, is necessary and will acquaint us with the true idea of God and His creation.

Until spiritual experience has fortified us to some extent, we may be disturbed by discouraging suggestions from mortal thought which may try to halt our efforts and nullify our work. This evil influence can always be effectively countered by these strengthening and reassuring words from the book of Daniel (10:12): "Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words." Truly, God hears our prayer and works with us from the moment we turn wholeheartedly to Him with a sincere desire to understand and to do His will.
