CHURCH ELECTIONS

The election of officers in branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, provides a valuable opportunity for obeying the By-Law found in Article XXIII, Section 10, of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy: "In Christian Science each branch church shall be distinctly democratic in its government, and no individual, and no other church shall interfere with its affairs." The form of democracy here instituted by Mrs. Eddy is not the indirect representative type, but the direct type, in which each member may express his own preference in the selection of church officers. One's ability to reflect God-derived wisdom is in this way given full freedom.

As with all branch church activities, election of officers needs to be linked with the spiritual meaning of Church as our beloved Leader has linked the human institution with it in her definition of "Church" on page 583 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures":

"The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.
