THE PERFECT MODEL AND THE PERFECT WAY

In order to reach a destination the traveler must stick to the right road. It is waste of time to wander into doubtful bypaths; it is wise for him to watch the guideposts and check up from time to time on the measure of his progress. These precautions are natural to any traveler.

Christian Scientists are travelers on the way of Life, but their journey is mental, not physical. Christ Jesus is the Way-shower. He speaks of himself as "the way," and by that we understand he referred to the way of Life, which he taught and practiced. Those who truly desire to take his path cannot fail to find it; it is a well-marked road, leading to spiritual freedom.

Mary Baker Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 30), "The great Way-shower illustrated Life unconfined, uncontaminated, untrammelled, by matter." In Christian Science we enter the way by the adoption of the truth Jesus taught and the life he lived, for he said (John 14:6), "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." In her article entitled "The Way" in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 355-359) our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, points out three successive steps in this mental journey. Briefly stated, they are self-knowledge, humility, and love.
