As a student of Christian Science I have found help and inspiration by reading testimonies of healing published in the Christian Science periodicals, and now that so many are entering the different military branches of the government I should like to testify to the healing power of Truth in my own experience during the First World War.

When I entered the Army I was subjected, like others, to many physical examinations. I had been a student of Christian Science since I was a young boy and had relied on its teachings to the exclusion of all that was unlike them; so the physical examinations were a new experience for me. Operating under fixed policies, the Army makes no exceptions, and for this reason I was compelled to submit to the examinations. However, I knew my real status as God's idea and realized that, although I was compelled to submit to physical examinations, I was free not to accept the material beliefs of the Medical Corps.

Those who entered the service at that time were required to be vaccinated against smallpox and to take three inoculations, or "shots," against typhoid. I had been vaccinated when I was seven years old, shortly afterward becoming a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School. This vaccination took and was accompanied by the usual aftereffects; so I was not what the doctors classify as immune. The old scar was apparent when I was examined; so the doctor in charge said that I would have to be revaccinated. This was done, and I was also given my first "shot."
