Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." The day that I consented to read this textbook was indeed "big with blessings" for me, because I was under a medical sentence of death after a life of great suffering, during which I had somehow struggled through school and commenced a business career.

After one I loved most dearly had passed on as a result of an accident, I collapsed completely and underwent two serious operations of an experimental nature in an attempt to readjust a prenatal internal malformation. I was sent home to die, although I did not know it at the time. Later I learned that the doctor had said I could not live more than three months and even then only with artificial feeding. At the same time my father's business failed, and we were faced with the prospect of losing our home. It was at this stage that Christian Science was introduced to me by one who had been healed of internal growths through its teachings. Within a fortnight of my reading the textbook my health began to improve and a mortgage was arranged to save our home. In less than two months I was able to start a small business at home.

I did not receive a quick healing; but there was a gradual awakening over the years as I held to the truth that God is my life, also to "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468) and to the article entitled "What Our Leader Says" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 210). Eventually there was a complete healing of my difficulty.
