When I was in a desperate state of mind because of a nervous breakdown and persistent insomnia, which all material means had failed to relieve, I turned to Christian Science for help.

Although I was persuaded from the beginning that the truth which it teaches was my only means of regaining health, my first steps nevertheless cost me much effort. The error in which mortals find themselves by reason of their false material beliefs and their ignorance concerning God and man's relation to Him can be so great as to seem insurmountable. But in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 380), "Truth is the rock of ages, the headstone of the corner, 'but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.' " This citation helped me to grasp the fact that Truth does annihilate all the false claims of error.

I put my trust in the many promises of the Bible, and little by little I gained confidence in God and in my true selfhood as a child of God. I had a long mental struggle with animal magnetism, which in many diverse forms tried to obstruct my progress. But the first fruit, which I gathered immediately, was peace of mind. This peace, which God alone can give, was from then on a most calming influence. It enabled me to rise above numerous mortal errors and to be in accord with God, the divine Principle, Love.
