The need for praising God at all...

The need for praising God at all times is prominently mentioned in many books of the Bible, and especially in the book of Psalms. David, the sweet singer of Israel, sang (Ps. 145:2), "Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever."

Many years ago, at a time when I seemed to be making little spiritual progress, I had an experience which proved to me that what I needed most was a more humble and grateful acknowledgment of God's mercy, goodness, and power and a more positive reliance on Him. I received what at first seemed to be a slight injury to one of my legs. However, by the next morning I was unable to stand on this leg. All during the day I applied faithfully what I knew of the healing truth gained from my study of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Then, remembering that she tells us (ibid., p. 420), "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them," I called on a practitioner for help.

Days went by, and I did not seem to be responding to the faithful work of the practitioner. I studied carefully and prayerfully all the references she gave me and also the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, but I was not healed. Every thought of discouragement was dealt with by both the practitioner and me; yet in all that time it never occurred to me to be grateful to God, the Giver of all good, for the blessings I had already received.
