THE CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS

Referring to Christmas, Mary Baker Eddy writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 256), "At this happy season the veil of time springs aside at the touch of Love." The eternal Christ, or Truth, is never touched by the finger of time, for it exists not in time but in eternity. Through the teachings of Christian Science the Christ is unveiled and in the darkened human consciousness there is light.

At first, perhaps, it is a pale gleam, a single star on the horizon of our understanding, but it grows in brightness as we advance and gradually and inevitably reveals the true nature of man. The Christ awakens consciousness from the deep dream of materialism. The spiritual beauty, power, health, and harmony of true existence are revealed. This is the real significance of Christmas. It is the advent of the Christ in human consciousness. In this age we have revealed to us through Christian Science the living, practical Christ.

We are not handicapped because our newborn understanding may seem small and frail. It is good, perhaps, to have it so in our early experience, for it teaches us to cling more closely to the truth we cherish and thus learn to safeguard our understanding against the malpractice which would snatch it from our grasp. We are tested at all points to see whether we are fitted to retain the Christ. No wise student will believe that it is given to us on unconditional terms. Its demands are great, and our loyal acceptance of them is necessary.
