Before I learned about Christian Science...
Before I learned about Christian Science I was beset by many problems. Our children were frequently ill, and I was tense and fearful concerning their welfare. Housework seemed tedious and never-ending. As a result of this situation, I felt myself to be mentally stagnant. I realized that our social life, which consisted mostly of evenings spent gossiping and drinking with friends, was not satisfying. I felt, too, that this way of life was not a good example for my children, and I longed to be a good mother, but did not know how.
Like Solomon, I prayed for wisdom, and truly it is wonderful how completely my prayers were answered. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says in the textbook, Science and Health (pp. 12, 13), "In divine Science, where prayers are mental, all may avail themselves of God as 'a very present help in trouble.' Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals." God's help was made available to us, for very shortly my husband's business was transferred to another city; and soon after establishing our new home there, we were invited to attend a Christian Science lecture. I was very much impressed by the loving manner in which the lecture was delivered, and soon afterward I bought a copy of Science and Health at the local Reading Room and began to study.
I was attracted by the daily life of the one who introduced us to this Science, and the thought came to me, Why, she is a true disciple of Jesus. Consequently, I rejoiced later on when I read in Science and Health (p. 271), "In Latin the word rendered disciple signifies student;" and I was able to understand that all who study and apply Christian Science are indeed disciples of the Christ, Truth. Mental stagnation completely vanished when I too became a student of this Science, and since then my experience has been one of joyous unfoldment in the home, in activities with children, and in branch church work.
