Over twenty-seven years ago a book was put into my hands the study of which changed my whole outlook on life. This book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent to me by a friend soon after I reached young womanhood. Up to that time I had not been very strong and was constantly under medical attention. I suffered a great deal from a weak back and spent much of my time lying on a couch.

The sudden passing of my mother filled me with sorrow. I had always loved the Bible, and in my grief I turned to it and tried to find within its pages an explanation of life. The fourteenth chapter of John gave me great hope and comfort and set me pondering as to who and what the Comforter, which Jesus promised, might be. It was at this point that Christian Science was introduced to me, and I know it came in direct answer to prayer.

Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 1), "Desire is prayer: and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." I had a great desire to know and understand God; as a child I had been perplexed and worried over main of the statements in the Bible. While I loved Jesus, I was terribly afraid of God and could not accept the orthodox teaching that they were one and the same.
