I began attending a Christian Science...
I began attending a Christian Science church because my wife was a member, but for some time I understood little of Christian Science and expected no benefit therefrom. One Wednesday evening I suffered from a severe headache, such as had been troubling me at times for many years. I told my wife that I was too ill to attend church, but she urged me to go. During the service the headache disappeared, and I have been free from these attacks ever since. The fact that Christian Science heals because it is based on Principle roused my interest and led me to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly and to attend church regularly.
Some time later and after several years of most discouraging experiences in business, I lost my position. For months I sought what I considered to be suitable employment and tried to use Christian Science to work out my plans. While this period seemed fruitless from human standards, I later realized that during it I was being led away from dependence on human will and human planning toward trust in God's all-power. Finally, after much study and with the loving help of a Christian Science practitioner, I found that I was no longer depending on material plans, but was happy to listen for God's guidance, knowing that my only real employment lay in serving Him.
One morning soon after this I left home with confidence that I was being guided rightly. A small agency of which I had never heard advertised a position in the newspaper; I called at the office and found a long line of men already there. Presuming that they also were applicants for this position, I immediately became discouraged. Would the job be worth my standing in line for, and would not my chances of getting it be very small? Then I recalled that I had been guided to answer the advertisement and realized that I could not be led into frustration. I took my place in the line. Almost at once a man came out of an office and asked whether anyone in the line was interested in the position for which I was going to apply. I was the only one. I secured the job, and within a few days I found myself in a type of work which has since become increasingly interesting and rewarding.
