Under the heading "Privilege of Members" (Art. XXIII, Sect. 8, of the Manual of The Mother Church), our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, provides for the establishment of Christian Science Organizations at universities and colleges. These organizations give young Christian Scientists who are away at college the opportunity to meet other Christian Scientists, to work with them in an organization officially connected with The Mother Church, and to take part in an activity which can be a splendid training ground for future branch church workers and practicing Christian Scientists. Testimony meetings are held at regular intervals, sometimes once a week and sometimes biweekly, at which those attending can tell of their own experiences in using Christian Science to meet their daily needs in scholastic work, social and athletic activities, and so on. Business meetings, committee work, and arranging for the annual Christian Science lecture which a college organization is privileged to give afford the students excellent experience in working with others in the Cause of Christian Science. The members of these organizations are thus engaged in a work which, for many, bridges the gap between Sunday School attendance and branch church membership.
With the beginning of a new academic year, there are many ways in which branch churches and societies, as well as individuals who are close to students of college age, may be helpful in indicating the desirability of association with this Manual-provided activity. While the college organizations at the beginning of each term make every effort to contact those in their institutions who are interested in Christian Science, it is felt that Sunday School teachers, parents, practitioners, and others can assist greatly in making this "privilege of members" properly known to our young people.
There is a list of the organizations now established at universities and colleges in the directory of The Christian Science Journal just following the list of branch churches and societies. Further information about them may be obtained by addressing communications to Theodore E. Metzner, Manager, Department of Branches and Practitioners, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
