My parents took up the study of...
My parents took up the study of Christian Science when I was about ten years old, and I was permanently healed of a physical condition which was expected to prove fatal within a few years. In the more than forty intervening years since that time, every discord which has presented itself to me has been harmoniously overcome when I have properly applied the laws of God as revealed to us in Christian Science, and in consequence a peace of mind which is priceless has been maintained.
On page 234 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures'" Mary Baker Eddy tells us, "You must control evil thoughts in the first instance, or they will control yon in the second." Several years ago I had a clear proof of the truth of this statement. While visiting friends the mountains, I was accidentally shot through the leg, and a small bone was shattered. As soon as a Christian Science practitioner was reached by telephone, the pain eased, and I had practically none after that until one morning several weeks later, when I began to entertain thoughts of discouragement, self-condemnation. and self-pity because the complete healing was not being manifested so quickly as I expected. By afternoon I was feeling thoroughly miserable mentally, and the leg was paining me severely. I called the practitioner and explained the situation, with the result that almost immediately discouragement was replaced with gratitude and the pain completely disappeared. However, the complete healing was not consummated until I had gained a higher sense of the unity of God and man.
My gratitude to Mrs. Eddy is unbounded, not only for her clear presentation or Truth through her writings, but for her wisdom and foresight in founding the Christian Science movement and in providing for its government through her Manual of The Mother Church. Membership in The Mother Church and membership and activity in a branch church have always brought me much joy, but during the past three years I have been awakened to a greater sense of gratitude for the protection and guidance afforded by The Mother Church. Because of the passing on of my husband, a complete change in my mode of living was necessitated. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner I experienced no grief or fear of the future. Upon moving to a distant large city, I was able to solve a problem of supply while studying in a Christian Science Reading Room. A suitable home was found through an advertisement in The Christian Science Monitor. Attendance at church services and lectures uplifted my thought and protested me from feeling that I was a stranger in a strange land, and the Christian Science periodicals were a constant source of sustenance.
