Christian Science was presented...
Christian Science was presented to me by a woman who came to help me with my children at a time when I was going through a severe trial. I had been told that my respiratory organs needed a complete rest and that I was too weak to take care of my children. I noticed that my friend read from a small book, and one day I asked her to let me read it. This book was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. As I read and pondered the chapter on Prayer, all distress left me. I devoured the contents of the book and was startled by the messages of truth in it. A member of my family noticed the change in my appearance and told me that I should continue to read. This reading completely transformed me. For the first time I learned that prayer is affirming man's likeness to God and denying the mesmeric suggestions of fear and disease. Maladies diagnosed by doctors as tuberculosis and asthma were healed in Christian Science.
I realized that man, as a spiritual idea of God, is embraced in the warmth of His love. He is intact and completely separate from the suggestions and arguments of mortal mind, which are unreal and powerless. Tuberculosis, I saw, must be unreal, for life is not in matter. Life is God, good. His law of health destroys disease. Therefore, man cannot be consumed; he is the indestructible manifestation of Life. Man is spiritual and includes by reflection only right ideas, which constitute his entire being. He is forever expressing vigor and vitality, not weakness. Because nothing inharmonious can be real, man remains untouched by false beliefs. God's law is superior to the so-called laws of mortal mind. Man, who is subject to the laws of divine Mind, is forever immune to mortal beliefs of heredity.
Through my healing of tuberculosis I proved true the following statement by our Leader in Science and Health (pp. 425, 426): "Discard all notions about lungs, tubercles, inherited consumption, or disease arising from any circumstance, and you will find that mortal mind, when instructed by Truth, yields to divine power, which steers the body into health."
The healing of asthma was outstanding. After I had treatment by a practitioner, a clearer realization of the perfection of God and man unfolded to me. This passage from Job helped me (33:4): "The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life." I perceived that man is not physique, dependent on the respiratory organs, but that man's true selfhood is the expression of Mind. This meant to me that "the breath of the Almighty" is the taking in of the enlightening ideas of Spirit, in which man lives and moves and breathes. These ideas come freely, are harmonious, unlabored, can never be interrupted or slopped. I saw spiritual facts where material beliefs claimed to operate. I saw that I did not need to heal sick matter, but that I needed only to rule out of consciousness the unreal claim of error. The only change needed was a transformation in my thinking. When I claimed my eternal unity with God, I awoke to see that my selfhood had not been touched by this mortal experience and that I could not have what never was. Evil is a belief in what is untrue, an illusion of mortal thought.
These healings have been permanent. My gratitude to God and to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who through her revelation is freeing mankind from all forms of evil, is boundless. I am grateful for class instruction, which has given me a better understanding of God's perfect creation and of the nothingness of matter.—(Mrs.) Marie L. Michielli, Hempstead, New York.
