THE INSPIRING JOURNEY

When one comes to a point where the pleasures of sense pall or the pains of sense become unbearable, he is ready for the inspiring journey each must make from sense to Soul, God. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy describes this tersely (p.322): "The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love. Then we begin to learn Life in divine Science. Without this process of weaning, 'Canst thou by searching find out God?'"

The textbook is an infallible guide in this journey, for it contains the rules of the Science of Christianity. Obedience to these rules enables us each step of the way to meet and master the temptations of the so-called carnal mind, which would hold us in bondage to the belief that man can be separated from God, his creator. The student of Christian Science early learns that by obeying the rules he draws near to the divine presence and thereby feels God's guidance and protection. God does not punish us for disobedience. We punish ourselves by withdrawing in belief from His beneficent presence.

Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 566): "As the children of Israel were guided triumphantly through the Red Sea, the dark ebbing and flowing tides of human fear,—as they were led through the wilderness, walking wearily through the great desert of human hopes, and anticipating the promised joy.—so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for them who love God."
