A GOOD EXAMPLE

In the fourth chapter of I Chronicles a long list of genealogies includes mention of one named Jabez. Brief as it is, a favorable impression is gained, for it is recorded, "Jabez was more honourable than his brethren." With a word brush of brevity a portrait is painted of a life lived according to divine Principle. Today, centuries later, the reader must respect the fine character reference Jabez earned.

The prayer offered up by Jabez to God is in keeping with the reputation accorded him. The Bible states. "And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying. Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, ... that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!" That this unselfed petition was heard of the Father is attested by the concluding statement, "And God granted him that which he requested."

During turbulent times such as the world is now experiencing, when material ideologies present threats to Christian standards, a solution for the problem may be found in the spiritual aspiration which identified Jabez' prayer. The suggestions of the carnal mind are, in belief, universal and aggressive in their false appeal to the material senses. Hence how imperative it is to maintain constant spiritual defense against the attempted encroachments of error. Health, happiness, and holiness result from a pure consciousness.
