MAINTAINING THE FACTS

A spiritual idea is a positive fact; in other words, there is no doubt about its existence. We can easily recognize the distinction between a spiritual fact and a material belief because a spiritual fact expresses divine Principle, whereas a material belief is an offshoot, or outcome, of the so-called carnal or mortal mind.

In order to stand on safe ground, that is, in order to maintain our scientific relationship with God, we must constantly affirm the positive truths of spiritual existence. These truths are perfectly simple. Once we have learned the nature of God, divine Principle, we shall know the ideas that are associated therewith, it is the ideas that originate in Principle which we must maintain, qualities such as health, joy, peace, and spiritual power.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 417): "Maintain the facts of Christian Science,— that Spirit is God, and therefore cannot be sick; that what is termed matter cannot be sick; that all causation is Mind, acting through spiritual law." The maintenance of the three facts referred to in Mrs. Eddy's statement is essential to maintain the true sense of health.
