STUDY
The writer of Proverbs clearly saw that the desire and search for wisdom would lead us into the understanding of God and of our own relationship to Him, for as indicated in the second chapter he wrote, "My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God."
Today in Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, its Discoverer and revelator, has presented to this age in her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the demonstrable understanding and laws of Life, Truth, and Love. The Bible, together with our textbook, will give every earnest seeker for Truth a comprehensive presentation and unfoldment of the Science of all true being. But being a Science it necessarily has to be demonstrated. Understanding, however, must underlie demonstration, and this demands study. Emphasizing this point, Mrs. Eddy writes in the textbook (p. 147): "Although this volume contains the complete Science of Mind-healing, never believe that you can absorb the whole meaning of the Science by a simple perusal of this book. The book needs to be studied, and the demonstration of the rules of scientific healing will plant you firmly on the spiritual groundwork of Christian Science. This proof lifts you high above the perishing fossils of theories already antiquated, and enables you to grasp the spiritual facts of being hitherto unattained and seemingly dim."
Christian Science makes an essential appeal to reason and logic. It needs to be thoughtfully and intelligently considered. The demand is made that one shall think, and think accurately. As Mrs. Eddy indicates, study does not consist in a mere perusal of Science and Health. Indeed it is clear that reading is not necessarily study.
