SANCTUARY

Sanctuary , in its highest meaning, indicates a place of security which cannot be disassociated from God's presence. In the past, church often served as an actual sanctuary to those fleeing from impending punishment. Frequently they took refuge in the church until their cases could be considered apart from the heat of angry avengers.

In I Kings we read (1:50), "Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar." And in the book of Ezekiel we are told (11:16), "Thus saith the Lord God: Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come."

In the peaceful sanctuary of a church service many a Christian Scientist has had the healing experience of dropping some burden of fear as he listened to the hymns of praise, an inspiring solo, or selections from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
