Mrs. Eddy refers on page 266 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," to the statement, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." That statement was proved true in my own experience. When I was a very young woman and in great need of physical help, Christian Science was offered to me twice. But having a skeptical attitude toward what I thought was just a new religion, I did not look into it.

Some time later, however, when I was a young married woman and still in need of help. Christian Science was brought to my attention the third time. A relative who had experienced a healing through this Science of almost total blindness sent my mother a copy of the Sentinel. In her great desire to help me, my mother lovingly read this Sentinel, feeling that Science was something worth giving a trial. I had exhausted the efforts of many physicians and surgeons, and now I was willing and ready to turn to Christian Science, for it seemed to be my only hope.

We wrote to the relative for information, and he talked to a practitioner, asking her to correspond with us. The practitioner asked me to discontinue all material means of help and to read the textbook, which she sent me. She stated that she would be taking up work for me at once.
