"Are we really grateful for the...

"Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more" (Science and Health, p. 3). This challenging statement by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, was proved true in my experience.

One of the blessings which I received was the complete and permanent healing of the serious effects of an accident when my car skidded on an icy pavement into the engine of a fast-moving freight train. Although I was the only student of Christian Science in the family, and a rather new one, my desire for Science treatment only was respected, and a practitioner was called. Lovingly she stood by me in the midst of human predictions that I could not live, or that if I did I would spend the rest of my life in a wheel chair. Each mortal mind picture was met so clearly with the truth that in a short time I was allowed to be taken home from the hospital, where I had been taken directly after the accident.

At that time I could move only my head, but from then on my recovery was steady, and in about seven weeks the practitioner said, "Today you must stand with God." No one can ever know what faith and courage it took to even try to stand on my feet, but I did; I took one step, then another, and from then on I was able to move normally. A few months later I started right out playing eighteen holes of golf, and to this day there is no evidence of any hurt.
