It is with deepest gratitude for...
It is with deepest gratitude for Christian Science that I submit this testimony. Over twenty years ago I was healed of imperfect sight through reading the chapter on Prayer in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
A friend whom I had not seen for several years came to visit me. During the conversation I mentioned that it was difficult for me to see to read and I felt that I should have to get glasses. I did not know she was a Christian Scientist until she offered me a Sentinel and invited me to attend church with her. After she had gone, I remembered that I had a copy of Science and Health in the bottom of my trunk, but had never read it. My interest was so aroused through this visit that I immediately got the textbook and started reading it, pondering deeply every sentence. When I came to the following words on page 14, "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints," I asked God to reveal their meaning to me so that I might know that they were true. As I pondered them for several hours, I began to feel as though I had been transformed. I was liberated from belief in the reality of a matter body and gained a glimpse of something wonderful and beautiful that was not of this world. I lived closely with the above statement of Truth for three days. That was the answer to my prayer, and I never realized when the false sense of imperfect vision was healed. It disappeared during those few days like a forgotten dream.
Since my first acquaintance with the scientific fact that man is spiritual, there have been healings of many discordant conditions, one of them being a weak heart, which was accepted as hereditary in our family. The healing of this difficulty was permanent when I saw that a so-called material heart could not change the perfection of God or the perfection of His spiritual idea; that this false belief had not changed my health or my strength and could not affect my right activity, all of which are spiritual. I can now run up three flights of stairs without any agitation in breathing.
