About two months before I took...

About two months before I took up the study of Christian Science, I suffered a severe heart attack, which presented alarming physical evidences. Similar attacks followed frequently. After I came into Christian Science and the truth was applied to the case, immediate improvement was evident. As I progressed in the study and application of Science, gradually more and more dominion was manifested, and at the end of three years the attacks, though still frequent, were greatly modified, causing little physical effect and no incapacity.

At this time an arresting statement of Mrs. Eddy's so awakened my consciousness and fortified me with the truth that the next time an attack appeared, I merely laughed at mortal mind's arrogance, knowing that my dominion as God's child was unwavering and indestructible. The difficulty immediately disappeared and has not reappeared. The statement referred to is found on page 201 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" by Mary Baker Eddy and reads, "So let us meekly meet, mercifully forgive, wisely ponder, and lovingly scan the convulsions of mortal mind, that its sudden sallies may help us, not to a start, but to a tenure of unprecarious joy."

From this I discerned that first of all we must meet these violent disturbances of mortal mind as Jesus did, not with personal or human power or fear, but with the might and intelligence of God, for therein is true meekness. In this way one may obey Mrs. Eddy's command (Science and Health, p. 419), "Meet every adverse circumstance as its master." Secondly, we must "mercifully forgive" mortal mind, that is, give up any claim that it has hurt us or can hurt us. Since God is All and made all that exists, all is good; therefore, all we can meet or know is good, and every situation that confronts us, seen in its true light, can only bring a blessing. Thirdly, we must give the situation careful thought, go over it point by point, see what it claims, or, in other words, see the lie, and by reversal arrive at the true picture.
