HOW TO WIN
Phyllis was in the sixth grade at school. She was a bright and happy student, always displaying an active interest in her daily lessons. One day her arithmetic teacher announced that on the following day a very important test would be given. Phyllis was thrilled with the challenge and immediately made up her mind that in this test she was going to stand first in her class.
The day of the test arrived, and Phyllis took the examination; but she knew in her heart that she had not done well. This puzzled her, for she had understood the subject when it was being taught. She was keenly disappointed. She walked home from school slowly, and by the time she arrived, her failure had become very real to her.
She and her mother were very close companions. Mother always stood by, ready to help. Thus, when Phyllis told her the story, it was decided that this was another opportunity to use their understanding of Christian Science. First they brought to light the fact that Phyllis wanted to stand first only because she knew that a great deal of praise would follow such an achievement. This would have made her feel self-important. Was not this mistake number one?
