RECOGNIZING THE RISEN CHRIST

Why was not Thomas there when Jesus came
In quiet splendor to the upper room?
Was he bowed down with overwhelming gloom,
Or did the busy cares of earthly fame
And business in the market make their claim?
Was Spirit buried in a rock-bound tomb
And overlaid in thought the precious name?

But Jesus came again another day
(Love never turns aside our faith, though dim),
Nor did the gentle Master stop to chide;
He showed the printed hands, the wounded side.
The weight of unbelief was cast away
And with the others Thomas greeted him.
